چکیده

Using the difference in the spatial domain (direction or location) between a target signal and noise, a system with a microphone array can achieve the goal of noise reduction and speech enhancement in various environments, especially, in speech-like noisy environments. This paper deals with various issues related to the use of microphone arrays in hearing aids. It includes overall principles, algorithms, real-time implementation, configuration, processing mode, geometry, combination with binaural processing, directivity pattern, frequency responses, and compensation for mismatch and misplacement of microphones. A practical microphone array device will be presented that uses microphone array based processing techniques to help hearing aids deliver improvement in signal-to-noise ratio, reduction of the effects of reverberation, and reduction of the feedback, with appropriate configuration and connections. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Development and assessment of two fixed-array microphones for use with hearing aids.

Hearing-impaired listeners often have great difficulty understanding speech in situations with background noise (e.g., meetings, parties). Conventional hearing aids offer insufficient directivity to significantly reduce background noise relative to the desired speech signal. Based on array techniques, microphone prototypes have been developed with strongly directional characteristics to be inco...

Howling and Entrainment in Hearing Aids: A Review

This review focuses on howling and entrainment artifacts in digital hearing aids. The howling may occur (especially at high gains), essentially due to the close proximity of the input microphone and the output loudspeaker. The entrainment, on the other hand, occurs when the input to the hearing aids is periodic, for example, music signals or alarm signals with strong tonal characteristics. We g...

Robustness Analysis of Gsvd Based Optimal Filtering and Generalized Sidelobe Canceller for Hearing Aid Applications

Multi-microphone noise reduction techniques for hearing aid applications go together with the use of small-sized arrays. Considerable noise reduction can be achieved with such arrays, but at the expense of an increased sensitivity to model errors or a priori assumptions. We evaluate the robustness of the Generalized Sidelobe Canceller (GSC) and a Generalized Singular Value Decomposition (GSVD) ...

Multi-Microphone Noise Reduction - Theoretical Optimum and Practical Realization

In speech processing systems with large speaker to microphone distance such as hearing aids or hands-free telephony the recorded speech signal is often heavily corrupted by additive acoustic background noise. Microphone arrays can significantly improve the received speech quality by extracting the desired speech source and suppressing disturbing background noise and reverberation. High performa...

Algorithms for future commercial hearing aids

This paper gives an overview of the state-of-the-art and the main challenges in hearing aid signal processing and describes which algorithms are candidates to be implemented in coming hearing aid generations. The future availability of a wireless link between both hearing aids will be taken into account. The main focus will be on directional microphones, classification systems and adaptive feed...
